Car Mover FAQ
September 9, 2009 | Comments Off | Car Shipping Tips
As with all of your other belongings, if you are moving, your cars probably need to go with you, which is where a car mover comes into play. Car movers load your vehicle onto a rack, possibly with vehicles belonging to other people, and then transport the car to a pre-determined unloading area where you will be responsible for picking the car up. The car moving company will transport the car via semi, where the rack will be attached to a trailer. The transport service will determine if your vehicle can be transported by their company, and will be responsible for loading and unloading your car.
The first step in safe car moving is to find the right car shipping company. The right car mover can mean the difference between getting your car to your new home safely and in a timely fashion, or having your car dinged up or damaged to to mishandling during the loading and unloading process. The first thing you should ask is if they will pay for damages or other unwanted side effects of mishandling during the transportation of the car should it occur.
Fortunately, most car movers abide by federal regulations, and are fully licensed, bonded, and insured. Be sure that the transporter that you chose is properly certified to ensure that your car will be protected. Be prepared to go over your car with the transport driver to document all scratches or dents, at both drop off, and upon delivery. This is done to protect all parties involved. Before the car is loaded, the owner must remove any personal belongings from the car, and then give the keys to the driver. Keep a spare set of keys for yourself, just in case as well. Be sure to tell the customer service or sales person giving the quote if the car is not in working order before delivery. Non drivable cars can require specialized equipment, and can delay transport if not planned for ahead of time.
Lastly, you will need to make sure that the car has about a quarter of a tank of gas before being loaded onto the trailer. The car cannot be on empty, because the car mover will need to drive the car on and off the auto transport, but it is advised that the tank not be full for safety and weight reasons. Some car movers might require proof of insurance for the cars that they transport. This is to verify that you are the owner of the car, and that should they damage your car, they can alert your insurance company that it was their wrongdoing, and then take the appropriate steps to ratify the situation. This practice is generally a mark of a trustworthy car mover.
Most of the reputable car movers will happily go over any and all questions with you, and will promptly take care of any needs that you may have before, during, or after your car is moved. In essence, the right transporter is a big help in a happy and worry free delivery.
